A Game Changer For Athletes

Designed for high-impact sports, the ORB Sport Smart Mouthguard tracks physiological data and head impacts in real-time, providing athletes and coaches with actionable insights without interrupting play.

The Problem: Blind Spots in Safety & Performance

Contact sport athletes often lack accurate, real-time data on head impacts and physiological performance. Existing tools fall short, leaving blind spots in safety and training decisions.

My Role

As Senior Product Designer, I led UX/UI design, focusing on clarity, accuracy, and ease of use for both athletes and coaches.

From Prototype to Powerhouse: MVP to Version 1.0

We launched fast with an MVP to validate a key question: Can a mouthguard deliver real-time insights? After proving the concept, we shipped V1.0, a refined experience with clear impact and performance data.

Key improvements from MVP to V1.0:

  • Intuitive session summaries

  • Enhanced physiology visuals

  • Smoother pairing and syncing

Decisions That Shaped The Product

Every decision was driven by real user needs and grounded in practical constraints.

Working with real constraints

We had just six months and had to use existing hardware and firmware. I focused on simple, technically feasible flows that could be built and tested quickly that helped us ship a stable MVP in time.

Learning from the competition

I benchmarked products like Whoop, Garmin, Strava, and Apple Health to understand user expectations. This helped us design something familiar yet distinct.

Testing early with real users

I ran Figma prototype tests with 13 volunteers, focusing on core flows like device pairing, session review, and data interpretation. This helped us spot early issues and refine key interactions.

Iterating on feedback

Users struggled to understand Movement Intensity. I redesigned the section with simplified labels and dropdown explainers making the data easier to grasp and act on.

Making Impact Data Actionable

We turned head impact data into clear, usable insights helping athletes understand when impacts occurred, how severe they were, and what that meant for recovery.

Design highlights:

  • Colour-coded impact severity levels

  • Timeline view to show impacts in context

  • Clear calls to action when safety thresholds were exceeded

Expanding from iOS to Android for Maximum Reach

Once the iOS app was stable, I led the design of the Android experience, adapting the product to meet platform standards while maintaining feature parity.

Design considerations:

  • Adjusted layouts for Android UX patterns

  • Rebuilt components to support varied screen sizes

  • Matched iOS features while optimizing for performance

Looking Ahead

As we scale, we’re focused on increasing clarity, speeding up onboarding, and enabling better collaboration between athletes, coaches, and medical teams. The foundation is strong, it’s about expanding the product’s impact.
